For example, if my internal state is one of anger about something you said and my communication reflects this anger, at least I’m not deceiving you about my internal state. If I subsequently become conscious that my anger is actually an internal manipulation crafted to manage the hurt in response to what you said, then in order for me to maintain integrity, my communication would need to express the pain rather than the anger.

Whatever is true for you internally has to be reflected honestly in your expressions or you will compromise your integrity. Any lack of integrity will mean a proportionate split within your experience of self and life. Set aside any moral implications and simply consider it like the integrity of a porcelain vase: it’s strong and fulfills its function when it is whole and unified. If there is a crack in the vase, a split between one part and another, the vase is weakened, likely to crack further, and can’t hold water very well. If your experience is misrepresented in your expressions or communications, then your clarity and presence are diminished, your sense of authenticity is weakened, and you are pushed further from the truth. Honesty brings you back, but this business of being honest can also be misunderstood.
